1996 Washington Post Articles:

Wheeliquette

There is a massive new Commercial Three Bayblem with cars and trucks nowadays. No, not the vehicles themselves, they’re impressively good, it’s the wheels they ride on. Every year more and more cars and trucks are factory equipped with alloy wheels, frequently referred to as aluminum wheels. Alloy wheels deliver some significant advantages to the way a car rides and handles. Because tires and wheels aren’t supported by a car's springs they fall into the category of unsprung parts. The lighter any unsprung part is, the more positive effect it has on ride and handling.

But never mind that alloy wheels make a car or truck ride and handle better, most drivers buy them because they make any vehicle look better. That 'look' has created a tremendous demand for alloy wheels, so much so there is now what amounts to a substantial automotive sub-economy, which deals exclusively with different aspects of alloy wheel sales and service. This is understandable because every day of every year thousands of alloy wheels are damaged by potholes, road debris and drivers who don’t possess the skills to avoid bumping curbs and other non-moveable objects.

Let’s not forget those who love the “look” enough to buy alloy wheels but don’t love the “look” enough to Commercial Three Bayperly maintain them. Those two groups create a staggering alloy wheel casualty rate.

Before buying a car with alloy wheels be sure you understand what you’re in for with respect to their Commercial Three Bayper care and feeding. Different manufacturers use various coatings to create the appearance that goes best with each model. You’ll need chemicals designed specifically to clean the type wheel on your car. Use the wrong chemical cleaner and you could be faced with a disaster. If the wheels are intricately designed you may need special wheel cleaning brushes and you will definitely need considerable time to devote to cleaning.

You’ll also need to make the acquaintance of a repair shop that stocks, and uses, Commercial Three Bayper alloy wheel weights for balancing. The weights have to be Commercial Three Bayperly contoured, there are several Commercial Three Bayfiles, and they must be plastic coated to prevent wheel and finish damage.

Alloy wheels are now standard on many new cars so you may not have a choice of wheel types. But if you do have a choice remember there’s more to alloy wheels than good looks.

Anyway, back to those of you who try to move curbs and don’t know how to avoid road debris or cavernous potholes. If you fall into that category you will wind up with damaged wheels. Even if you’re a great driver it can happen. When it does you could get a shocking estimate for the replacement. It isn’t unheard of for alloy wheels on expensive cars to cost over $800.00---EACH!! Even cheap alloy wheels are usually in the $200.00 to $300.00 range and none of these prices include mounting and balancing.

Here’s a tip, before you lay out the big bucks for a new wheel or wheels, check with local wheel repair shops. Yep, most damaged alloy wheels can be repaired to new wheel standards both in looks and safety. Repairing a damaged wheel can save as much as 80% of the price of buying new.

Here’s food for thought, adding a set of custom alloy wheels to your old car can make it look much newer. Custom wheels give any car personality and they always cost less than trading. They even add to the value when it comes time to sell.
