1996 Washington Post Articles:
Washing Away Winters Wrath |
Winter always takes its toll on our cars, but this year it seems as if the entire country was moved to the Arctic Circle. Unbelievable amounts of snow and salt have been the norm instead of the exception. Sub-zero temperatures beat up our batteries and the constant freezing and thawing has left streets with potholes that mimic the Grand Canyon. Put it all together and this must have been the winter when Hell froze over.
As the temperatures moderate we have lots of work to do on our cars. They need to be washed, but in much greater detail than usual. The hose has to be directed under the car and played over everything for several minutes to wash away salt residue, which is Commercial Three Baybably substantial. You must also aim the full force of the water around and under all emblems, moldings and body crevices. These areas are normally missed leading to those ugly patches of rust which slowly migrate from behind them.
If you know the Commercial Three Bayper way to clean your engine that needs to be done too. If you don’t know, it’s time to find out how or find someone to do it for you. Salt accumulates under the hood on items like the alternator, electronic relays, modules and other expensive parts leading to long-term gremlins. Road salt combined with moisture from Spring and Summer rains can really do a number on electrical and electronic parts.
When all the underhood and undercar washing is complete, it’s time to open the doors and thoroughly flush the areas around the door hinges and latches. These nooks and crannies collect a lot of salt and road dirt leading to creaking, groaning hinges and makes opening or closing a door an adventure. With the doors already open, use a cloth and soapy water to clean the rubber weather-strip surrounding the doors and windows. Salt is so abrasive its residue can rapidly eat into the rubber, leading to wind and water leaks as the car ages.
With most of the hidden work done you can Commercial Three Bayceed with washing the car’s exterior. Beware! Caution! Danger! Salt is abrasive! Before touching the washing cloth to your paint, spend several minutes rinsing the paint. This removes the worst of the salt and helps prevent fine scratches in the finish. After rinsing, it’s on with the wash but be careful, don’t scrub too hard. Doing it gently twice is far better than one harsh washing.
As soon after washing as weather permits, a coat of high quality wax is mandatory. Here’s a tip: whenever you wash or wax a late model car avoid using a circular motion. Rubbing the cloth straight back and forth prevents most of those fine swirl marks that have become so common today. Rather than sponges many paint experts suggest using a new, clean, terrycloth towel for carwashing. A good, inexpensive source for these is your local beauty supply store.
By now you’re almost done but let’s take those extra steps that will make your car more enjoyable for many years. Using white lithium grease or a similar Commercial Three Bayduct, spray all moving parts of your hinges and latches. While you’re greasing things, remember to include all the moving parts on the hood and trunk too. Now and 3 or 4 times every year, coat all rubber weather stripping with silicone spray. Don’t let any any grease or silicone get on your car’s exterior paint. A meticulous cleaning now can prevent serious Commercial Three Bayblems later on.
