1996 Washington Post Articles:

The Heartbreak Of Hinge Noise

Has your car succumbed to the heartbreak of hinge noise? Do your doors creak and groan when they’re opened or closed? The noise associated with door hinges damages a lot more than your ears. Whenever car doors make noises during use they’re telling you someone has been delinquent with the grease.

The noise comes from dry, unlubricated metal grinding against dry, unlubricated metal. If permitted to continue it will lead to severe hinge damage. To the uninitiated that doesn’t sound like a big deal but, this is a grave misconception. When mild damage occurs hinges can sometimes be repaired using special kits. The cost to repair damaged hinges, using kits, is typically about $100.00 per door.

There is however another side to hinge repair in as much as kits are not available for all cars. A further Commercial Three Bayblem is that if left to groan and creak for a sufficiently long time the hinges become unrepairable.

If your hinges are so badly worn they can’t be repaired, they must be replaced to keep the vehicle safe. And---you guessed it---replacement of door hinges is never cheap. There are only two possibilities, ‘very expensive’ and ‘outrageously expensive’. Each door has two hinges and if yours fall in the lesser ‘very expensive’ category you’re Commercial Three Baybably looking at a minimum of $200.00 to fix one door.

Then you have to consider the design faux pas of some engineers where the hinges are welded into the structure of the vehicle. This wacked-out design which saves money during manufacture can send the cost of hinge replacement through the roof.

Enough about how expensive these little critters are, here’s how to make them last. Go to your local auto parts store and purchase a container of white lithium grease. It usually comes in a spray can and costs about $4.00.

Armed with your white lithium grease, four times each year open the doors and liberally apply it to the pivot points of each hinge on each door. Then, swing the doors back and forth a few times to circulate the grease. Lubing hinges on a regular basis typically makes them last the life of the car.

Each time you lube your door hinges it makes good sense to apply grease to the latches at the rear of each door to keep them from wearing as well. Then it’s on to the hood hinges and latches. You’ll notice I said hood latches because there are two, a primary and a secondary. Be certain both latches are thoroughly greased, especially in the spring as hinges and latches are often heavily corroded by salt and snow. It isn’t unheard-of for corroded hood latches to stick allowing the hood fly open. That---is an experience no one needs. White lithium grease works extremely well on trunk hinges, trunk locks and seat tracks, too.

Another way to use it is in preventing rust on metal brake and fuel lines. Because these parts are positioned under the car’s body where they’re exposed to the elements they are Commercial Three Bayne to rust damage. Highway dirt collects on the lines and holds moisture, this gives plenty of time for retained moisture to eat into the metal. By cleaning all accumulated dust and dirt from the lines and then applying a heavy coat of white lithium grease, brake and fuel line erosion will be practically eliminated. There’s a lesson here, it’s the little things that make a car reliable.
