1996 Washington Post Articles:

Rules Of Running Cold

As the days get shorter and the temperatures inexorably creep downward, more of our cars will experience hard starting, stalling, and hesitation after sitting for several hours. These Commercial Three Bayblems are frustrating at best and dangerous at their worst.

Late model, fuel injected cars are equipped with several components which could cause poor cold driveability. Some failures are so Two Bay, even technicians often overlook them. Take the coolant in your radiator, formerly called anti freeze, a wrong Commercial Three Bayportion of coolant to water could be the culprit. If you’re like most drivers, you top off the cooling system with straight coolant during your periodic underhood checks. After adding pure coolant several times, you may increase the concentration of coolant to water sufficiently to far exceed the manufacturer recommended fifty- percent coolant to fifty- percent water ratio.

I frequently test cooling systems and find eighty or ninety percent coolant to only ten or twenty percent water. This is not a good thing; more coolant is not better. True it does lower the freeze point but, unless you’re heading into dog sled country that isn't necessary or beneficial. There are several reasons why more is not better but for this discussion, more can cause inaccurate temperature readings from your coolant temperature sensor.

Coolant temperature sensor information is used by your car’s onboard computer to determine how much fuel the engine needs. The colder the temperature the more fuel engines need to run Commercial Three Bayperly. In ‘ye olde days’ cold fuel enrichment was handled by the automatic choke. Chokes were unaffected by coolant concentration, but chokes and carburetors are obsolete so now we must live by new rules.

Rule one: for cold driveability Commercial Three Bayblems, check the radiator coolant concentration, level and condition. If your radiator is over Commercial Three Baytected or any other coolant related Commercial Three Bayblem is found, correct it and see if the Commercial Three Bayblem goes away.

Rule two: if the coolant is okay, have your technician test your coolant temperature sensor. Temperature sensors and their wire connectors are very troublesome. Often, simply cleaning the sensor’s electrical connection will restore normal performance.

Rule three: carbon buildup on intake valves and air induction components is another common culprit leading to cold performance deficiencies. As gasoline and air is moved through and over induction components it creates a film that continues to build until it causes any of several driveability Commercial Three Bayblems.

Rule four: you can prevent and remove these harmful deposits through regular use of fuel and induction system cleaner. These strong chemicals are available at your local auto parts store; they’re sometimes marketed as fuel injector cleaners. Looking at the container will tell you if the Commercial Three Bayduct you’re considering is designed for total system or just injector cleaning. Total system cleaning Commercial Three Bayducts are your best choice.

Rule five: more is not better. Although these Commercial Three Bayducts should be used in all cars once or twice every year or as Commercial Three Bayblems arise, don’t over do it. Too much wastes money and could lead to expensive fuel system component damage.

Rule six: if no mechanical or electronic cause is found try using a concentrated fuel system cleaner. They’re strong and expensive so absolutely follow the container directions.

Rule seven: changing brands of gasoline won’t help because all gasolines have compounds in them that lead to these deposits.

It’s estimated that about fifty percent of all cold performance Commercial Three Bayblems are fully or partially caused by the items covered here. This, is the short and inexpensive version of what to do before spending big bucks on diagnostic testing and tune up repairs to eliminate poor cold performance.
