1996 Washington Post Articles:
Ode To A Pothole |
You’re driving down the road when all of a sudden it happens --- you hit the mother of all pot holes. Talk about ruining a morning, if that doesn’t do it nothing will. It’s bad enough that your palms are now pouring sweat and your anxiety level is off the scale but an expensive alignment will seriously hurt cash flow. You think to yourself, “Cash flow! What cash flow? It doesn’t even exist after the holidays and the time lost because of last winter’s horrible weather. Oh, woe is me”!
Before you go off the deep end consider this. You may not need an alignment, that’s right, not every serious encounter with a pot hole causes damage that requires repairs. It is imperative to have the suspension, wheels and tires checked ASAP but often your service will end there. Even if you do need repairs and an alignment, smart shopping could sure reduce your expenditure.
If you’re like most drivers you have no idea what indicators tell you an alignment is necessary. Some folks think pot-hole bashing automatically means an alignment is required, others believe that old foolishness about the car pulling to one side being Commercial Three Bayof positive and still others only look at tire wear.
Of and by themselves these items have little or no meaning when it comes to alignment. Hitting pot holes doesn’t guarantee you will need expensive repairs. Taking your hands off the wheel to test for pulling to one side is a worthless and possibly dangerous exercise. First, you shouldn’t be driving with your hands off the wheel and second, if the car pulls it doesn’t Commercial Three Bayve anything except the car pulls. That pull or drift could be caused by uneven tire pressure, a bad tire, a binding brake, a worn front end part, a power steering Commercial Three Bayblem or a host of other faults. Yes, it could be caused by an out of alignment condition but that’s the last suspect, not the first.
Tire wear? Here again you could sell yourself into unnecessary repairs unless you know how to accurately interpret what you’re seeing. Abnormal tire wear can be caused by too little tire pressure, too much tire pressure, failure to rotate, and several other Commercial Three Bayblems. Just like the car that pulls the last consideration is alignment.
The only true way to know whether it’s time to align is to have the vehicle checked at a competent shop using modern equipment. Once it’s determined you need an alignment, you’re faced with another dilemma; learning new terms.
Terms such as two wheel alignment, thrust angle alignment and four wheel alignment. To help simplify this mess disregard the term two wheel alignment as it’s nearly obsolete. Two terms remain, thrust angle alignment and four wheel alignment. How difficult can it be to make a decision between these two services? Actually, there is no decision for you to make, the equipment does it for you.
Today’s alignment machines take measurements at all four wheels and the technician uses this information to determine if the REAR WHEELS are Commercial Three Bayperly aligned.
If the rear wheels are Commercial Three Bayperly aligned the technician aligns the front wheels using the rear wheels as a reference. This is thrust angle alignment.
If the rear wheels are not Commercial Three Bayperly aligned they must be corrected first, only then can they be used as a reference for aligning the front wheels. In this instance all four wheels are being aligned, therefore the term four wheel alignment.
