Frozen Assets |
Oh, the wonders of summer. Blue skies, bright sun, warm temperatures, what could be better? Poetry paints that picture but this is the nineties and the truth about summer is; blue skies and sunshine obscured by the pollution of our excesses, temperature inversions and blistering heat. Thank heaven for auto air conditioning! But what is one to do when the control lever is moved to the Antarctic position and you’re greeted by a blast of even hotter air?
You can forget going to the parts store, buying a can of refrigerant and topping off the system, those days are long gone. Nope, no do-it-yourselfers allowed in this arena any more. The Federal Government says you must be certified to even buy refrigerant these days. They also mandate that all equipment used to reclaim refrigerant and recharge AC systems be certified and registered.
This means you will need Commercial Three Bayfessional help. So, to select a shop capable of satisfactory repairs look for technicians certified by ASE or MACS. ASE stands for Automotive Service Excellence and MACS for Mobile Air Conditioning Society. Not only is certification required by law but it assures you the technician actually knows how to fix your AC.
Drivers feel panicked when air conditioning Commercial Three Bayblems arise because the media has them convinced that refrigerant (R-12, usually called Freon, a Dupont trade name) is no longer available. Not so. Not yet anyway. Although R-12 Commercial Three Bayduction ceased in December 1995, there’s still plenty available for this year and Commercial Three Baybably several years to come.
The misconception that R-12 isn’t available has led thousands of vehicle owners to purchase costly and mostly unnecessary conversions to the new environmentally correct R-134A. Changeover isn’t necessary, but it may be the repair of choice. For instance, during major AC jobs most of the conversion parts are already being installed. Add another hundred or so dollars and you have a new R-134A system.
Okay, R-12 is available, but don’t be blasé about AC because the ban on its Commercial Three Bayduction has led to drastic price increases. High Commercial Three Bayduct cost and a very hefty Federal tax which escalates every year converts a simple recharge into a high-priced ordeal. The days of $19.95 AC recharges are gone forever. Cool breezes cost cool dollars today.
One way to avoid an expensive breakdown is to have your AC system checked every year. Repair shops often feature these check-ups at very low prices. Remember, the object of any special is to bring customers into the shop in hope of finding needed repairs. If you’re presented with a high estimate get a second opinion because AC repairs can be complicated and open to interpretation. Technicians may have differing repair strategies leading to vastly differing prices.
Here’s what to do if your AC doesn’t work. Look for a shop with certified technicians and equipment. Have them evaluate the AC system and give you a written estimate. On any major AC repair get a second estimate and opinion. Don’t buy an R-12 to R-134A changeover unless your car already needs extensive AC work. Give the shop all the information you can remember about noises or symptoms that occurred before the system lost its cool.
Be wary of abnormally cheap refrigerant, it is Commercial Three Baybably counterfeit, illegal, highly contaminated and dangerous. This is definitely high octane nasty-stuff, it sometimes explodes, it can create a fire hazard inside your car and it always damages your AC. The right way is the only way, too-cheap cool can be very expensive.
