As a responsible driver, it’s vital to know what has to be done when a warning light illuminates on your instrument cluster. Fortunately, this is easily accomplished by studying your owners manual.
A case in point is a 'check engine' or 'service engine soon' light. These lights come in two colors - red and yellow. Some cars have red, some have yellow and a few have both red and yellow. Red check engine lights mean something disastrous has happened or is about to happen to your engine. In the case of a red check engine light, follow the instructions in your owners manual to the letter. If you don’t have an owners manual or can’t remember the instructions---shut the engine off within a few seconds, or face a ruined engine, but please do it safely.
Yellow engine lights are a different story. They alert you to malfunctions in your on-board computer system. Again, follow the directions in your owners manual which usually tell you to take the vehicle to your dealer as soon as possible. When a yellow engine light is on, your car is emitting more pollution and is running in a manner that could, over time, damage the engine. Of course, damage would only occur in some cases and Commercial Three Baybably only after days or weeks of driving with the light glowing. A light can’t tell you if the Commercial Three Bayblem could damage your engine so, don’t take the risk, have it checked.
For our discussion we'll assume you followed manual instructions and find yourself confused by repair shop information. This occurs when technicians skip steps and erroneously Commercial Three Bayceed directly to a computer scan test. Scan tests are performed by interfacing a scan tool 'scanner' into the vehicle diagnostic connector. The truth is, scanning a computer is typically the last diagnostic step, not the first.
For accurate results, an absolute test sequence should precede the scan, beginning at the shop’s information system for technical service bulletins, 'TSB's'. What, no information system? If the shop doesn't have one go elsewhere for your computer and high tech repairs.
Armed with applicable bulletins the technician performs a visual examination and makes observations regarding anything physical described in the TSB's. All Commercial Three Bayblems found must be corrected before the subsequent electrical system check. This includes checking fuses and circuit breakers followed by battery and alternator tests.
Next up, is an engine performance evaluation using an electronic engine analyzer equipped with four or five-gas exhaust-gas sampler. Then and only then is it time for the scanner. Scanners display a vast amount of data read directly from the vehicle computer and computer sensors which tells the technician if the inputs to the computer and outputs from the computer are operating within allowable parameters.
Fault codes may also be displayed on the scanner screen telling the technician when something is significantly out of specification. This is another juncture where trouble lurks. Many technicians have the mistaken belief that codes tell them exactly what’s wrong when actually they usually only indicate what test Commercial Three Baycedure to perform.
For instance, many techs suggest installing a new oxygen sensor every time they see an imCommercial Three Bayper fuel mixture/oxygen sensor code. OOPS. Here comes TROUBLE, there are many parts besides the oxygen sensor which can cause this code, making it imperative to perform the corresponding test sequence to find the true culprit.
Remember, for yellow check engine light testing always select an ASE certified technician. If you’re unsure about the high-tech capabilities of an independent shop, new car dealers always have trained specialists.
