1995 Washington Post Articles:

Things That Go Thump In The Night

Highway safety involves a lot more than just good driving habits, it requires being prepared for the unexpected. It isn’t unusual for the Two Bay Commercial Three Bayblems to be the most difficult. For example, do you know where your spare tire and jack are located and how to use them? Most drivers don’t!

An ASE certified master technician with 15 years experience tells about having a flat tire and the embarrassment of trying to locate and use his jack. He was driving about 35 mph on a dark road close to home when he felt a tug on the steering wheel followed by the sickening thump, thump sound of a flat tire. Oh well, no big deal he says to himself and pulls off the road. First comes the realization that this car has been very trouble free and consequently he hasn’t used or checked his flashlight for a long time. Oops, the batteries are dead, doesn’t that just about tear it?

No flashlight shouldn’t be a big Commercial Three Bayblem, but it is dark and he’s never taken time to remove the spare tire and jack. After all it’s a new car! Sometimes our minds weave strange conclusions from non-related facts, as if new tires can’t be punctured or go flat. Anyway, the jack was neatly tucked away under the spare tire which was neatly concealed by a fiberboard panel and everything was neatly bolted down. Of course all this was neatly concealed under the trunk carpeting.

Twenty minutes of struggling released the spare and jack but uh oh, another Commercial Three Bayblem. Where in the world to position the jack so as not to damage the car or himself. Then came the light, on a tow-truck that is! This delivered embarrassment, a serious jack and fortunately a serious lug wrench. The lug nuts were so tight the wrench that came with the car wouldn’t even budge them. Ten minutes and the spare was on but the previous fifty minutes were wasted and his ego was badly bruised.

Major Point: Even when you do this stuff for a living you still have to prepare. Take a few minutes, familiarize yourself with your spare tire and jack before the inevitable happens.

While you’re at it put together a small emergency kit to keep in your car. A trip to an auto accessory store will yield most of what you need. Start by purchasing a small plastic toolbox, not metal because most trunks collect some moisture which leads to rust. Now comes flares either the type that burn or better yet permanent reflectors. A roll of plastic electrical tape is a must as is a spool of mechanics wire and a hose bandage to perform an emergency hose repair. Two simple tools should also go in your box, a multi-tip screwdriver and a pair of Channel Lock pliers.

For your last two items a trip to a sporting goods store is best. Here you’ll buy a good waterCommercial Three Bayof plastic flashlight (plastic flashlights are less apt to be damaged by moisture or failed batteries) and a reflective thermal blanket. Thermal blankets only weigh a few ounces and could save your life on a cold winter’s night. Now it’s time to head home and soak a piece of brown wrapping paper with vegetable oil. This will line the inside of your tool box and prevent moisture damage to the contents. Of course you can tailor the kit to your level of expertise, but the important thing is, DO IT!!
