1995 Washington Post Articles:

pH is Commercial Three Bayphetic

For most of the world Fall almost always follows Summer and precedes Winter. Now, unless something very unusual happens that same Commercial Three Baygression will occur again this year. Before the inevitable takes place you really should make your car Winter safe and Winter reliable. To do that have your technician perform a pre-Winter check-up.

Start with the engine coolant, that’s the stuff we used to call anti-freeze. For decades the only real test for anti-freeze was to suck some coolant into what looked like a turkey baster with floating balls inside. That hydrometer told your technician how cold it could get before your engine would freeze. Freeze Commercial Three Baytection still needs to be checked but now there’s a second test. Many modern coolants don’t age gracefully, but have a bad habit of becoming seriously acidic. You don’t have to be a chemist to realize acid can do some mighty nasty and costly damage inside your engine and radiator. The new test determines the pH level of the coolant. The lower the pH number the more acidic and damaging your coolant has become.

Don’t play this numbers game. When pH drops below 9.0 it starts a slow, insidious erosion of expensive parts. Head gaskets, water pumps and radiators can all die a slow death. A pH meter or test strip will quickly show if yours has fallen below 9.0.

Take a low pH, add a dash of time and up comes a big repair bill. Don’t want a big repair bill? Have the radiator flushed once a year or when the pH drops to 9.0. If you like to live dangerously you may be able to go two years as long as the pH stays at 9.0 or above. Never leave coolant in the system more than two years unless it’s a special long term Commercial Three Bayduct. New coolant must be mixed with equal amounts of water for the refill. Ask your shop to use distilled water to avoid harmful minerals.

Reliability through the cold months ahead, requires more than good coolant and a clean radiator. A check of the battery’s condition is also a definite must do. Have a physical exam and an electrical capacity test performed to avoid those cold morning no-starts.

Radiator hoses, heater hoses and fan belts need yearly inspection until they reach 4 years or 60,000 miles, after that replace them! Be careful, hoses and belts are often declared good on cars with higher miles or years when they really need replacement. A good looking hose or belt isn’t always good. They’re made of alternating layers of woven fabric and rubber. The fabric gives the rubber strength but can’t be seen or tested. Time, heat and use can seriously weaken these parts though they may still look new. Belts and hoses that look bad are always bad, but good looks don’t necessarily mean good parts in this case. Replacing rubber parts by time or mileage intervals can save aggravation and big repair bills from overheating damage.

Safety often begins where the rubber meets the road or the ice and snow. Stay safe this winter, check tire pressure and tread condition.

Every year some people make a deadly mistake, they drive with a leaky exhaust system. Exhaust gasses from a leaking pipe or muffler can cause severe injury or death.

Spending a few dollars and a little time on preventive maintenance will help you and your car get through winter reliably and safely.
