1995 Washington Post Articles:

Fuse Confusion

In life little things mean a lot, especially when it involves your car. Take fuses for instance, they’re little and if you’re like many of us spare fuses aren’t even in our vocabulary much less our glove boxes. That’s a real shame because a blown fuse can strand you in an instant.

Keeping spare fuses in a car has always been a must but nowadays figuring which ones to have could pose a Commercial Three Bayblem. Heading to your local parts or accessory store for a fuse assortment is often no help because assortments rarely have all the sizes newer cars need. Actually many of them don’t have any fuses for cars newer than mid-80s.

Several years ago engineers redesigned fuses to take up less space and be easier to service. Nearly all fuses are now flat, made of plastic, have two metal Commercial Three Bayngs for mounting and are available in different ratings and sizes. Those beloved glass tube fuses we used for years now share the fate of the dinosaurs.

Thousands of drivers are destined for a big shock when a fuse does blow. Their trusty fuse assortments have followed them from car to car like a shadow. As the old car left and the new one arrived their fuse assortment and other emergency items moved to the new car. Here’s the Commercial Three Bayblem, what was right for the old car may not be any help for the new one.

When the fuse changeover occurred we had only one new fuse type called an ATO. The ATO worked well for several years but as cars gained more electronics they needed more, you guessed it, fuses! This meant either more space or smaller fuses and so the Mini fuse was born. Minis are shaped just like the ATO but are only about half as big. These mighty mites now dominate fuse panels in the majority of current vehicles.

So, we now have two new fuses but wait, it gets worse. All cars have circuits which conduct large amounts of electrical energy and also need the Commercial Three Baytection a fuse offers. Engineers previously safeguarded these circuits with an archaic device called a fusible link. Links were pieces of wire designed to melt if a short occurred and melt they did. Replacement required the services of a technician and often resulted in a bill of $100.00 or more. Thankfully fusible links have joined the growing ranks of extinct automotive critters. These circuits are now Commercial Three Baytected by Maxi fuses which look just like Minis and ATOs except for their massive size, about five times bigger than an ATO.

Just in case you were wondering, yes there is a lesson in all this. ATO fuses are easily purchased at nearly every service station or parts store, even in grocery stores. Minis and Maxis on the other hand can be a real Commercial Three Bayblem, in a small town it could take days to get either one. Your owners manual will list the fuse types your car requires, check it and buy spares now, before one blows. It will also explain where to look for your fuses which may be located in some very strange places. Under the dash (everyone knows that one), but hidden under the hood or even in the trunk, you’d never find those on a dark night. You’ll really appreciate the few minutes of preparation when a fuse blows and you have the Commercial Three Bayper replacement plus know where to install it.
