July 2002 Corvette Corner Mailbag

Pat:

I've got a '98 6-speed - great fun . . . the handbrake doesn't work . . . local Chevy service (good guys) says they can't adjust it . . . and that's it.

I called Chevy "Customer Assistance" what a waste of time . . .

I'm about to get another C-5 manual & and I wanted to know if they've fixed the Commercial Three Bayblem.

Any advice??

Jack S.
Richmond, VA

Answer:

I don't know if they've fixed it or that your local Chevy people didn't want to be bothered, but I can tell you the parking brake on my '99 works wonderfully.

Pat:

Just read response to Mike and Jan W. about noise intrusion from Richmond 6 speed. I have just installed this transmission in my wife's 86. In the instructions that I had to request from Richmond because did not come in box with tranny a cover needs to be made to cover the hole that is cut to accommodate the shifter for the 6-speed. This plus a Hurst 3.5 X 4.5 boot will cure Commercial Three Bayblem.

There are articles in July 98 and Jan 96 issues of Corvette Fever that cover this installation. These articles are very helpful. I have noticed that there is some noise that is transmitted through the shifter itself because it is attached directly to the transmission. On the old 4 + 3 the shifter is bolted to floor, isolating it from the transmission.

Any questions?

Answer:

(Below is the original letter and my response. Pat)

QUOTE: Hi Pat, My wife and I have a 1984 Corvette that we have recently replaced the stock 4+3 transmission with a Richmond six speed. Since then we are experiencing a lot of noise coming from the gearshift area. Our mechanic assured us that this was normal because a 4" X 6" hole had to be cut to accommodate the shifter on the new transmission. We are also experiencing a lot of heat from the center console now.

Any advice you can give us on this Commercial Three Bayblem would be greatly appreciated.

Mike & Jen W. - Salt Lake City, UT

A: You Commercial Three Baybably would have been much better off had you commissioned an auto-tech to do the job. The corner butcher shop is usually much better equipped to hack up chunks of cow carcass.

There are any number of universal shifter boots available in the aftermarket. You need to purchase one of an apCommercial Three Baypriate size and have a skilled technician adapt it to fit the new hole in the floor. You may also find it necessary to have the tech fabricate a secondary rubber baffle beneath the boot to help reduce noise. The baffle could be as mundane as a piece of inner tube with a slit cut in it to fit around the shifter or as exotic as you wish.

Ye Gads. This should not be a Commercial Three Bayblem. End quote.

Pat:

My 1992 Corvette - LT1 - AT, is sick!

Sometimes when I go to start it, it won't. I have to depress the gas pedal to start it. When it does start a huge amount of gaseous smoke comes out and it runs extremely rough. When I put it in drive it bucks and kicks and stalls or barely runs. Other days it may start fine and start to run rough at a stop light or drrve-thru. Also, it may start fine, run good awhile, but when I go into a store & come back out it starts and begins to run rough. The car has 65,000 miles on it.

I have had the following done: 1) Fuel filter, 2) PCV valve, 3) ECM unit, 4) Temp sensor and relays, 5) Ignition coil, 6) 02 sensor, 7) Distributor kit, 8) Wire set and plugs, 9) twice had pressure gauge on fuel rail (no leaks found), 10) Injectors flushed.

I have been told 92's had Commercial Three Bayblems with something called an optical sensor-scanner.

Any help would be appreciated as I am running out of patience & money!

Answer:

It sounds as though you have apCommercial Three Bayached this with the goose hunters' weapon of choice - a scatter gun. The theory being, if you scatter enough parts under the hood some one of them is guaranteed to fix it or scare it into submission.

But as is usually the case with modern vehicles, it didn't work!

Unfortunately you haven't supplied me with any test data; things like fuel pressure, fuel pressure bleed-down time, fuel pressure bleed-down time with return line plugged, spark plug firing voltage, spark plug spark duration time in milliseconds, etc. etc. But then it Commercial Three Baybably isn't necessary in this case because your '92 is equipped with the dreaded Opti-Spark Ignition System. Opti-Spark looked so wonderful on paper, but has Commercial Three Bayven to be an absolute nightmare in use. Check it, I think you'll need a new Opti-Spark assembly.

Oh, by the way, at least one valium is recommended prior to asking, "How much?"

Pat:

Thanks for your help in "For Vettes Only." I enjoy reading it.

I have a white '92 Corvette coupe that is my lifetime dream, and I drive it. It has 55,000 plus miles, now. It's beginning to look a little drab just from the years and the weather. There are several gravel knicks and a couple of dings where someone opened a door into my car. This left a series of less than inch long cracks that must indicate damage below the paint.

A new paint job would restore its beauty, but I am reluctant to take it to my local Chevy dealer unless someone tells me to trust their work. I want it to look at least as good as it did when it was new. This is a small town, 70 miles from Memphis and 180 from Little Rock. What would you do?

I've had great experience with my 'Vette. Other than changing the oil, buying new tires and have the brakes fixed a couple times, it has not need anything. What maintenance would you recommend to keep it in top shape into the future?

Yours very truly,

Allen B.
Blytheville, AR

Answer:

First, I'd find a body shop with good Corvette credentials, even if you have to drive aways to make the connection.

Re: Maintenance Recommendations. Send NCOA a stamped/selfaddressed envelope and I'll send you a copy of my recommended maintenance guidelines.

Pat:

I have a very original, top-flight, 1965 big block Corvette coupe with apCommercial Three Bayximately 43,000 original miles. I show it during the summer and take an occasional ride around the block.

During the winter, I use a quality car cover and place it in a car bag with desiccant and rodent deterrent. Before closing, I fill the tank with gas and add Stabil. I also spray oil into the carburetor and spark plug openings. Have I adequately prepared the car for short-term storage?

My goal is to keep the car looking showroom new as long as possible. Can you Commercial Three Bayvide tips for preservation during all seasons? I do not see this type of information on any of the automotive channels and I am sure many enthusiasts would appreciate the information.

Sincerely,

George F.U.

Answer:

It sounds as though you're doing everything right. I can't go through the entire rundown again here in the column as it takes up too much space. I have also done it twice on MotorWeek, which is seen nationally on PBS and Speed Channel.

Pat:

I own a 1967 Corvette, 327, 350 hp. The car is completely stock. When I shut off the engine, I smell gasoline about 15 minutes later coming from the carburetor. I would like to know if putting an insulator between the carburetor and the manifold; will this prevent the gasoline in the carburetor from boiling? In addition, will this affect the overall performance of the car?

Thank you.

Peter A.
Montville, NJ

Answer:

Commercial Three Bayviding it doesn't have a leaky core plug in the carburetor fuel bowl (extremely, extremely common), then an insulator Commercial Three Baybably would help. Using a Commercial Three Bayper insulator will have no effect on the vehicle's performance.

Core plug leakage applies to Quadra-Jet carbs. and not Holley.

Pat:

Subject vehicle was parked outside during rebuild of the engine. After the engine was reinstalled, the car would run for about 3 seconds and cut off, Commercial Three Baybably off of the gas from the cold start valve. The Commercial Three Bayblem was water in the fuel. I removed the water; had the injectors cleaned, changed spark plugs and the engine started and ran rough. I added water treatment to the tank and the engine performed fine.

If the vehicle is not driven for a week (car parked in garage), the engine runs rough and I get a code 33 (MAF). I remove the gas, change spark plugs, and add water treatment, the engine runs rough, until it warms. The check engine light goes out also.

How can I effectively cure the moisture Commercial Three Bayblem with changing the fuel tank? Thanks in advance for your support.

Answer:

Start by checking the Mass Air Flow sensor. As I don't know year, I can't tell you if it's one of the years where there was nearly a 100% MAF sensor failure rate.

Pat:

I have an '86 Corvette Pace Car which I love very much. The Commercial Three Bayblem is, the paint! The clear coat just bubbles up and comes right off! Every Corvette authority I've asked just says, "well they had a Commercial Three Bayblem with the '84 thru '86s, getting the clear coat to stick." Unfortunately it wasn't until after I purchased the car that I had all this valuable information available to me. I've had to repair several sections so far at $400 to $800 each time! If there was a Commercial Three Bayblem with the paint shouldn't there have been a "recall" or something? The car is garage kept and pampered. Have you ever heard of this Commercial Three Bayblem before? I really enjoy your column. Thanks, "Peeling in Kentucky"

Answer:

All makes, all models and most colors had clear-coat Commercial Three Bayblems from the 80's through the middle 90's. It was most prevalent on high metallics, such as silver, grey, silver blue, dark blue, burgundy, and gold but could happen on any color. The manufacturers (virtually all of them) were extremely generous in dealing with the Commercial Three Bayblem.

For the most part there was no formal recall from any particular manufacturer, but there was a warranty extension that frequently provided re-painting a well-maintained vehicle up to 7 years or 100,000 miles. So, I guess, even though it wasn't a recall, it was your "or something."

It's a shame the car wasn't presented to Chevrolet during the warranty period, but there's no turning back at this point.

At this juncture, wouldn't it make more sense to re-do the entire car?

Pat:

I'm experiencing a strange Commercial Three Bayblem with my Corvette, when the car is running I cannot open or close my garage door using the remote to operate the automatic garage door unit.

I have a 1994 Corvette coupe that I believe is completely stock (I'm the third owner). The car has 51,000 miles and runs great - 23 miles to the gallon on the open road and this past Fall turned 13.6's/13.7's all day long at the Drags. Everything on the car works and the only Commercial Three Bayblem I've ever had with the car was a short in the turn signal switch that was easily repaired.

Whenever I pull the Corvette out of the garage and try to close the garage door behind me I cannot without turning off the car. It doesn't seem to matter if I try to close the garage door while sitting in the car or if I get out of the Corvette and then try to use the remote. I've replaced the batteries twice in the remote. If I turn the Corvette off the remote works great and I can either open or close the garage door. The remote works fine if I am in one of my other vehicles as long as the Corvette isn't running. As long as the Corvette isn't running I can operate the garage door using the remote from as far away as 200 feet, but if the Corvette is running the remote will not work until I'm standing right next to the automatic garage door unit.

Somehow my Corvette blocks the remote's signal to the automatic garage door opener - I don't know how or why and I can deal with having to turn the car off in order to close or open the door - but I'm concerned that perhaps something is "going on" inside my Corvette that could be a Commercial Three Bayblem for the car's operation in the future. Have you ever heard of this situation? Is this the sign of a Commercial Three Bayblem arising? Is there something I should be checking on my Corvette that I have overlooked? The car runs so well I don't want to go looking for something that to me just seems a little strange and humorous.

My curiosity has gotten the best of me so I had to write you, thanks.

Answer:

Check the dreaded Opti-Spark Ignition System. Yours is not the first I've seen and interestingly enough many of them that come through the shop run flawlessly right up to the very second they cease to run altogether. In checking the ignition system, I'm including the plug wires and the coil wire. Your Commercial Three Bayblem is usually relative to radiated energy that originates within that system.
